Leonard Oakes’s 2008 Icewine: Best In State

Congratulations to Jonathan Oakes, the Oakes family and everyone who pitched in to make the 2008 Icewine of Vidal Blanc the very best in New York State after winning the Best In Show at the 4th annual New York Icewine Competition.

This isn’t shocking news to anyone that’s followed the trail of this wine’s previous double gold medal awards and high wine ratings but it does reinforce that in only a few years time, Leonard Oakes Estate Winery has proven itself to be one of the best Icewine producers in the country – and some would argue the world.

Winemaker Jonathan Oakes sees the acknowledgment as an indicator of the region’s future.

“I think there’s just unlimited potential in our area,” said Oakes. “It’s going to rely heavily on who jumps out and makes a distinct claim as to what is what our region can be known for.”

Oakes, who also leads the winemaking team at Schulze Vineyards & Winery, is pushing ahead while reaching out to other winemakers in the area to share knowledge and collaborate on how the region as a whole […]

Schulze Vineyards & Winery Siegfried 2011

Schulze Vineyards & Winery has released its newest vintage of their Siegfried white wine and once again it’s one of the most unique wines made in the state. If you’re a dry white wine lover you’ll be happy to know that since the 2010 vintage the winery has opted to keep this wine on the dry side with it’s gold reserve label.

The Siegfried grape was developed at the Research Center Geisenheim in Germany where they crossed Riesling and Oberlin 595 grapes in order to create an more earlier ripening, cold hardy and downy mildew resistant grape. There are only a handful of wineries growing Siegfried in North America and Schulze is the only producer in New York State releasing a single varietal version.

The 2011 release is powerfully aromatic with bright aromas of pineapple, white peach and apple with a curious cotton candy note. Even in its youth it’s still showing great balance with a zesty refreshing finish.

Carmelo’s Restaurant Breaks New Ground

Foodies who pride themselves on eating local have found Carmelo’s Restaurant in Lewiston, NY as a destination for some of the best “farm to table” cuisine in the region. Never before has that term been more literal than with the restaurant’s “Butcher’s Supper.”

Chef Carmelo Raimondi and sous chef Bruce Wieszala have created a three-course feast featuring a suckling pig from T Meadow Farm in Lockport, NY as the main attraction.

“We’re breaking new ground here,” says Raimondi.

And he’s doing it with style. When I was lucky enough to share in the first of such dinners, our main course was met with cheers and applause by the other diners as the chefs carried the whole roasted pig through the restaurant. By the time they set it down the rest of the staff were gathered around with other patrons taking pictures and admiring the sight.

Raimondi has helped establish T Meadow Farm as the go-to for locally raised meats and while you may see […]
