Long Cliff Winery 2011 Pinot Noir

Long Cliff Winery works with mostly estate grown grapes and this pinot noir is no exception – with the winery’s farm providing all the fruit in this wine. Owner and grower Don Demaison is no stranger to the heartbreak grape after having worked with the largest planting of pinot noir east of the Rockies just down the road from his farm.

Long Cliff’s soils are on the heavy side, with clay and rock derived from the Niagara escarpment. It’s in these types of soils where pinot noir tends to gain more structure and intensity. Pinot noir has the tendency to be light and simple in some conditions so any location that amplifies its flavors and backbone is one in which is sought after.

Long Cliff’s 2011 Pinot Noir is vibrant with chocolaty notes along with sweet red fruits, chalky tones and delicate aromas of pin cherry wood. A relatively cool 2011 season […]

Leonard Oakes Reserve Cabernet Franc 2010

Leonard Oakes has achieved greatness seemingly overnight with Icewine while delivering delightful cool climate Rieslings and Chardonnays, you-better-take-notice hybrids and balanced easy drinking reds. A recent release of their newest reds has propelled the winery to new heights thanks to the spectacular 2010 vintage and the precise winemaking of Jonathan Oakes with his Reserve Series Cabernet Franc 2010.

As we should all know by now, cabernet franc grapes thrive in the Niagara region’s soils and microclimates. Depending on the vintage, vineyard and winemaker it can produce light fruit forward, juicy reds while it can also become dark, fleshy, earthy and intense. Leonard Oakes’s 2010 Cabernet Franc probably resembles the latter but it’s a wine that even in its youth is bringing mouth filling flavors in a delicate yet lively structure.

This wine is dark and certainly won’t be confused with pinot noir or other delicately colored wines. With aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, vanilla, dried herbs and spice this wine is already mature in its complexity […]

Leonard Oakes Estate Winery Chardonnay 2010

Winemaker Jonathan Oakes has made one of the most appealing unoaked chardonnays in the region with this 2010 vintage Chardonnay. Made from estate grapes grown on their farm in Lyndonville, NY this wine exhibits all the fruit forward characteristics you’d expect from a well-made cool climate chardonnay.

Delicate citrus aromas mingle with green apple and melon to produce an intense aromatic white wine that’s light on its feet and easy drinking. Although technically dry, this wine is silky and smooth with a crisp acidity keeps it bright, refreshing and full of energy.

This chardonnay can persuade the most anti-chard crusader to reconsider thanks to its stainless steel aging and butter-free approach. For $17 there’s no doubt this sell fast, especially as the temperatures warm up this summer.

Schulze Vineyards & Winery Siegfried 2011

Schulze Vineyards & Winery has released its newest vintage of their Siegfried white wine and once again it’s one of the most unique wines made in the state. If you’re a dry white wine lover you’ll be happy to know that since the 2010 vintage the winery has opted to keep this wine on the dry side with it’s gold reserve label.

The Siegfried grape was developed at the Research Center Geisenheim in Germany where they crossed Riesling and Oberlin 595 grapes in order to create an more earlier ripening, cold hardy and downy mildew resistant grape. There are only a handful of wineries growing Siegfried in North America and Schulze is the only producer in New York State releasing a single varietal version.

The 2011 release is powerfully aromatic with bright aromas of pineapple, white peach and apple with a curious cotton candy note. Even in its youth it’s still showing great balance with a zesty refreshing finish.

Eveningside Vineyards Cabernet Franc 2010

Eveningside Vineyards owner Randy Biehl has released another stunning red with his 2010 Estate Cabernet Franc 2010. From one of the ripest vintages in the region yet, this wine is full bodied and luscious on the palate with spicy aromas of pepper, tomato leaf, blackberry and currant.

Even though the winery’s vineyard is no more than one acre in size, the quality of fruit makes up for the quantity and the cabernet franc based wines of Eveningside are always some of the best in the region. It’s another great example of Niagara Escarpment AVA grown cabernet franc and the heights it can reach in warm vintages.

In the winery’s tasting room this wine is selling for $22.95 and is a deal considering there were only 120 cases produced.
